Wild Wednesday Extras

Wild Wednesday Extras

Here is a pitfall many dancers succumb to: Arm Extras. You are probably familiar with them. This is when an extra flourish, dip, movement or other embellishment is added to the port de bras. This is often done unconsciously, but sometimes in an effort to add a personal style.

These unwanted and unnecessary extras often include raising the arms too high prior to a grand pliƩ, excessive wrist movements, or overly exaggerated movements in general.

Ballet’s beauty lies in its simplicity. As the classic line in the movie The Birdcage goes “…don’t add, subtract.”

Keep it simple!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Ballet Secret #16dd:
“Avoid unnecessary extras.”
