Fun Friday Hops
Is there anything more fun than hopping
on pointe? Well, fun for the audience, perhaps.
Hops on pointe are interesting. The
cushioning effect of a plié in the knees that is normal for other jumps is
still present, but there is also a relaxation in the ankle – essentially an ankle plié. This is often a problem for dancers
who are learning to hop on pointe, since relaxing the ankle tends to pull
them backwards and off relevé.
What has to happen to make the hops possible
is sometimes called “cupping the foot”. It is a position where the usual full
stretch in the foot and ankle is changed to a lesser curve - a different position thta is unique to hops on pointe. It is easier to see
than describe. See the Link of the Day below at 1:20.
Have fun hopping!
