Saturday Superstition

Saturday Superstition

The number three often figures prominently in rituals and superstitions. For instance, bad luck is said to occur in threes. Then there’s “three’s a crowd”, or the three bears, etc. In history, the number 3 represented harmony because 1 meant unity and 2 meant disorder. Therefore three was a harmonious conclusion. This website talks about many other beliefs related to the number three: http://www.icysedgwick.com/numbers-in-folklore/

One superstition I never heard is the belief that turning around three times will bring good luck. In some theatrical circles this is combined with turn three times, curse three times and spit three times. Hmmm. I never experienced this in the dance world – we have enough of our own ideas!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Superstition #165:
“Turning around three times will bring good luck.”
