Mad Monday Press not Pull

Mad Monday Press not Pull

The barre arm is so often forgotten! Dancers are always putting their focus on everything else and the arm on the barre is left to its own devices. Sigh.

But the arm on the barre is important! The sensations in this arm help develop the equal-and-opposite energy feelings needed for every step since the arms balance the body and the legs. Never underestimate the power of the barre arm!

The arm on the barre presses down and never (except in certain pull-away-from-the-barre exercises) pulls away. Pulling away shifts the weight off the supporting leg and that’s never a good thing.

Also, the hand on the barre never grips or squeezes. Think of the barre as a human partner and you’ll know immediately how much pressure is appropriate.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #16w:
“The barre arm presses down, it never pulls.”

Quote of the Day:
“The word "frustration" is defined as the unfortunate tendency of lessening one's destiny. Rise up and take all frustrations away! Stop squeezing your dreams into a small size...”
