Fun Friday Equal Partners

Fun Friday Equal Partners

I talk frequently about equal and opposite energy and how important it is in dance technique. It is also critical when working with a partner.

A partnership is just that: equal partners. If each dancer does his/her job well the results are breathtaking. And there are many instances of equal and opposite energy.

For instance, in a hand-in-hand promenade (in attitude derriere, for example), the man provides a strong upward energy in his hand and arm, and the female presses downward into this strong base. If this doesn’t happen – well – the promenade will wobble and fail.

In any supported jump, the female must apply equal and opposite energy into a good preparation (often glissade) and this allows the man to lift her using not just his strength, but the impetus of her jump. In this case, timing is everything.

Apply the concept of equal and opposite energy when you are doing pas de deux work. It will make everything easier - and partnering will become fun and exciting. For you and the audience.

“It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being.”
