Wacky Wednesday Wiggles

Wacky Wednesday Wiggles

There is seldom a place for wiggles in ballet. That’s right. Movement in ballet is pretty strictly prescribed and wiggling into or out of a position is frowned upon.

You know what I mean. Wiggling the body into place when one is angled a bit too far for a good croisé position; or wiggling in the preparation position before a pirouette; or wiggling into position after landing a turn. But probably the most common area for wiggling is this: wiggling into a tighter fifth position. Scary.

Is there ever a good time for wiggling? Maybe if one is slightly out of position in a corps de ballet rehearsal, then a slight wiggle to straighten out the line would be in order. Of course this is certain to be noticed by the choreographer and/or director.

Wiggling is seldom good in ballet.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Ballet Statute #160:
