Saturday Pins and Pennies
The superstition of picking up a penny
being good luck may come from this old rhyme: "See a pin, pick it up/ and all day long you'll have good
luck/ See a pin, let it lay/ and your luck will pass away."
The rhyme is included in early books of
nursery rhymes, and is similar to this old English proverb from the 17th
century: ”He that will not stoop for a
pin, will never be worth a pound.”
For dancers, picking up a pin is not an
uncommon occurrence and is certainly critical to prevent injuries – especially when
dancing barefoot!
