Mad Monday Scrape

Mad Monday Scrape

In a rond de jambe, the foot takes a straight path through first position, just as it does in a cloche. See http://balletwebb.blogspot.com/search?q=mow about how this is like mowing the lawn – the foot cuts a straight, unwavering line.

Not only must the path be straight, the foot must be perfectly aligned as it moves along this track through first position. Unfortunately, in a rond de jambe the angle of the foot when it is fully stretched in derriere often doesn’t fully resolve and the front edge of the arch scrapes through first with the little toes not touching the floor. Scary.

The bottom of the foot must be in full contact the floor in first position. Full contact. No scraping through allowed.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #11q:
“The edge of the arch must not scrape the floor in rond de jambe.”

“They talk about big skies in the western United States, and they may indeed have them, but you have never seen such lofty clouds, such towering anvils, as in Iowa in July.”
