Wild Wednesday Beat Formula

Wild Wednesday Beat Formula

The world of ballet technique is filled with formulas. Today I’m talking about the formula for beats.

The difficulty with beats is performing an angular in-and-out movement as opposed to something that looks like a stuck-together front-and-back movement. Scary.

To prevent this, here is the formula for beats: up, open, beat, open, beat. The dancer jumps up, then the legs open sideways to a small second position in the air, next the legs beat together, then the legs open back to second, then they beat again before landing. This is the basic formula for something like an entrechat quatre. For more beats you simply add on.

Now it may seem as though there isn’t enough time to get all that stuff accomplished during the brief time you’re in the air, but it does work. Practicing at the barre - or as I mentioned in a previous blog - lying on your back with feet in the air helps develop the muscle memory for the important in-and-out pattern.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #15www:
“Remember the formula for beats: up, open, beat, open, beat.”
