Throwback Thursday and Florence Walton
Florence Walton was born in 1890 in
Wilmington, Delaware. She was a dancer in vaudeville in the early 20th
century. Her career began in the chorus of The
Girl Behind the Counter.
She is known as the dancer who
popularized the tango and the fox-trot as well as other styles of ballroom
dance. She was frequently partnered by her husband Maurice Mouvet. They met
when Ziegfeld paired them in his production of The Rose Maid. Soon they were promoted as Maurice and Walton, or
The Waltons and during the height of their popularity were second only to
Vernon and Irene Castle. But in 1920 they divorced.
She went on to dance with Alexandre Vlad
and Leon Leitrum. Walton and Leistrum were known in Paris before returning to
the United States where they performed in supper clubs and on the Keith vaudeville circuit.
She died on January 7, 1981 in New York
City.
