Mad Monday Ballpoint

Mad Monday Ballpoint

Today, June 10th is National Ballpoint Pen Day. Seriously. This made me think of how bourrées should appear to be as smooth as a line drawn by a ballpoint pen.

This is accomplished by taking very small – very small – steps, and making sure that the knees are relaxed. This is important. Try doing bourrées with straight legs and you’ll see the problem. That’s like a ballpoint pen that skips because it is running out of ink. Scary.

When bourrées are done brilliantly it looks like the dancer is on rollers. This illusion is especially effective when there is dry ice cloaking the action of the feet.

So think about rollers – ballpoint or otherwise – whenever you do bourrées.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #33w:
“Traveling bourrées should appear as smooth as a line drawn by a ballpoint pen.”

“You want to be a writer, don't know how or when? Find a quiet place, use a humble pen.”
