Fun Friday Fouetté Corset
A common problem in fouetté turns is that the rib cage tends to splay open, which causes the arms to open too far, and…well, you get the idea. The rib cage
must remain in a neutral, closed position – just as though you were walking
down the street. But when concentrating on all the other mechanics of a perfect
fouetté, it’s often difficult to remember the ribs along with everything else.
So imagine wearing a corset. You know,
those antique undergarments popular a century or more ago. In fact, a
traditional classical tutu has boning in the bodice much like an old-fashioned
corset, and this is probably why some dancers say they fouetté better in
costume.
Your imaginary corset will keep the ribs
and everything else in the torso properly positioned.
