Mad Monday Plume
Those old-fashioned plumed pens seen in
old photos and movies provide a great image for rond de jambe en l’air. You
know the pens: they have a sharp, pointed tip designed to be dipped in an
inkwell, and a fluffy plume on the other end. Definition of plume: “a long, soft feather or arrangement of
feathers used by a bird for display or worn by a person for ornament.”
When performing a rond de jambe en l’air
imagine drawing a circle or oval in the air with the sharp tip of the plumed
pen. This makes the circle clean and avoids the muddy, all-over-the-place type
of circling that so often ruins the look.
This image also helps the foot stretch more,
as though the foot itself was the pointed end of the plumed pen.
