Fun Friday Jaw

Fun Friday Jaw

Dancers are generally highly motivated individuals. I find that they don’t need a heavy handed approach to “make them work”. And a difficulty I had, and I know others have is how to relax in a classroom setting where constant criticism is the norm – no matter how hard you are trying.

Hopefully, the criticism is constructive and not destructive, but even directives that are delivered in a kind manner can cause tension – especially in those who tend toward overachieving (most dancers).

So how can you relax in class? One trick that works pretty well is to think about relaxing your jaw. That’s right. Your jaw. Often this is where tension manifests and taking a few calming breaths and relaxing your jaw can help you dance better and work more effectively. It works well for performance jitters too. Try it.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #21xx:
“ Calm your breathing and relax your jaw.”
