Terminology Tuesday Autour de la Salle

Terminology Tuesday Autour de la Salle

Autour de la salle (oh TOOR duh lah sal) is a term in the Cecchetti school of training. It means “round the room”. It indicates that a series of turns and/or jumps are to be performed in a circular pattern around the room or the stage.

I seldom hear autour de la salle used today, instead the French term en manège is used. It means “as at a riding school or in a cirucus ring” (Gail Grant, Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet).

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #30l:
“Autour de la salle means ‘round the room’.”

Quote of the Day:
“There is something particularly special and personal about the circle and how its curves comfortably rule every aspect of our lives.”
