Fun Friday Upside-Down

Fun Friday Upside-Down

Turnout is a hotly debated subject among dance teachers and I am on the side of not forcing turnout. It can be developed very successfully without forcing or (gasp!) using devices marketed to increase turnout. It just takes time to do it effectively and safely.

The first step for students is to recognize how much turnout capability they have. To do this, have them lie on the floor with their feet pointed to the ceiling. Tell them to flex their feet and rotate in the hip sockets to an upside-down first position. This is their natural range of turnout.

Most people do not have anything close to “flat turnout” so when students first see where their actual turnout is, it is often an unwelcome surprise. Encourage them by letting them know this is to be expected, and that their turnout will improve over time.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #3x:
“Lying on the floor with legs extended toward the ceiling shows the natural range of turnout.”
