Freaky Friday Fun Fall

Freaky Friday Fun Fall

Today’s theme is an extension of a previous blog: Ballet Secret #7w:  A dancer must not be afraid to fall.

Fear of falling is normal, but for a dancer falling is inevitable. Therefore, learning how to fall is important. Modern dance classes are helpful for this, and so is simply experiencing falling in class. This is infinitely preferable to falling in front of an audience, but the longer one dances the more likely this is to happen.

Think about and practice falling on the softer, more padded parts of the body, particularly the seat, sides of the upper thighs, etc. It is possible to teach your body to automatically roll to a soft place when a fall occurs – most of the time. It is also important to train your body to relax and not tense up during a fall.

In most cases, when a dancer falls, there is no injury. Most of the time. If an injury does occur, it is usually a minor one. All that being said, the fall scene in the movie Red Sparrow gives me chills.

Try to look at falling as just one more skill to be achieved, and try to have fun with it, like a young child does. A good attitude goes a long way toward eliminating fear.

“You can't become a decent horseman until you fall off and get up again, a good number of times.
