Technical Tuesday Flexor

Technical Tuesday Flexor

When learning anatomical terms, it is often helpful to know the origin and meaning of specific terms. The first one is a more obvious one – at least to dancers – the word flexor.

The word flexor is derived from the Latin flexus, the past participle of flectere which means bender. Dancers are well aware of what it means to flex their feet, so there is no surprise here.

Flexor is often used with other anatomical terms such as flexor carpi ulnaris. Carpi refers to wrist, therefore flexor carpi means “wrist bender”. Ulnaris refers to the position at the ulna bone, so flexor carpi ulnaris means “wrist bender at ulna” or “bender of the wrist at the ulna”. Whew!

The point is, learning specific, commonly used terms permits an easier understanding of other, more complex anatomical terms. For other terms, see today’s Link of the Day below.
