Throwback Thursday and Roman Jasinski

Throwback Thursday and Roman Jasinski

Born in Poland in 1907, Roman Jasinski danced with the Ballet Russes and was known for his good looks and elegant style. He studied dance at the Warsaw Opera school and in 1928 he was hired by the Ida Rubinstein Ballet. In 1932 he joined Col. W. de Basil’s Ballet Russes.

In 1933 he left the Ballet Russes and joined Balanchine’s experimental company in Paris and London. Later that same year he made his American debut with Serge Lifar’s touring company. Jasinski then returned to the Ballet Russes where he stayed until 1947.

He married fellow dancer Moscelyne Larkin on Christmas Eve in 1943. He and his wife founded a dance school and company in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1956, building it into a well-known and well respected organization. He never lost his Polish accent, and people regarded him as an elegant, Old World gentleman.

Roman Jasinski died on April 16, 1991 of congestive heart failure. He was 83 years old.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
