Technical Tuesday Serratus Posterior Muscles

Technical Tuesday Serratus Posterior Muscles

The serratus posterior muscles include the serratus posterior inferior and the serratus posterior superior. These two, thin superficial muscles of the back begin at the spinous processes and attach to the ribs. They are sometimes called the spinocostal muscles for this reason.

These muscles help stabilize the spine, and support the muscles of respiration. For dancers, expanding these muscles aid in supporting the arms during port de bras, and thus prevent drooping arms.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Anatomical Secret #171:
“The serratus posterior muscles include the serratus posterior inferior and the serratus posterior superior.”
