Saturday Stay Up Statute

Saturday Stay Up Statute

One common problem in pirouettes and other turns is when the dancer comes down (off relevé) too soon. As we all know, all pirouettes finish up, in retiré, and on relevé, before they go anywhere else. Technically speaking, all turns finish up.

Today’s Ballet Statute #109 is another way to think about it: “Stay up until the turn is finished.” That’s right. You’re not allowed to come down, and off relevé unless the turn is fully finished, and you’ve come back around to the starting position (or the designated finishing position).

At first this may be more difficult than you imagine, especially if you are in the habit of completing the final ¼ turn on the whole foot. Scary.

Stay up!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute #109:
“Stay up until the turn is finished.”
