Technical Tuesday Serratus Anterior

Technical Tuesday Serratus Anterior

Sometimes referred to as “wings” the serratus anterior muscles allow a great range of movement for the arms. They are sometimes called “boxer’s muscles” because they allow quick, extended movements necessary for a good punch. And, if this isn’t enough, the serratus anterior muscles are accessories in breathing. Whew!

But there’s more! According to the website,  https://breakingmuscle.com/fitness/getting-to-know-your-serratus-anterior-strengthen-your-wings, The serratus anterior muscles

“originate on the upper eight ribs and insert into the medial border of the scapula. They stabilize the shoulder blades and when flexed will spread the ribs for an inhale. The greater the inhale, the greater the internal pressure. This pressure creates a strong support for action, balance, or resistance.”

When a  dancer is working on improving port de bras, it helps to imagine the arms beginning at the spine and unfolding from there – like the wings of a bird. It works perfectly with the anatomy!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets
Secret #:
“The serratus anterior allows multi-direction movement of the arms.”
