Fun Friday Washing Machines

Fun Friday Washing Machines

You will remember Ballet Secret #14a: The word ‘promenade’ means to take a walk so as to meet or be seen by others. There is no mention of a washing machine. None. Then there is Ballet Secret #14i: In an arabesque promenade, remember that the hood ornament doesn’t steer the car. When the hood ornament steers, one is dangerously close to the washing machine phenomenon.

You know what I mean:  instead of looking like a porcelain doll rotating on a pedestal, dancers sometimes look like they are imitating the  back and forth sloshing action of a washing machine. The torso goes one way, the arms another…Scary!

While clean technique is always sought after, washing machines…not so much. Instead, hold the body in one solid piece – like that porcelain doll – and allow the small pivots on the ball of the foot to take you around.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret #14gg:
“Avoid washing machine promenades.”

Quote of the Day:
“Normal is nothing more than a cycle on a washing machine.”
