Mad Monday Columns

Mad Monday Columns

Here we go again with yet another image for those all-important plies! One of the most critical components in a pliĆ© is the body’s alignment and it must stay straight and lifted throughout the movement. Alas, this is easier said than done. There is a tendency for dancers to lean forward, and when this happens the seat goes out….scary.

To prevent leaning and sticking-out, imagine being on the inside of a column. It is a large column, like those seen on Greek ruins or on the front veranda of large houses. It is hollow inside with just enough room for a pliƩ without leaning.

You can imagine this column any way you wish, from an elaborate Corinthian embellished one, to a simple, round geometric one. It’s your own personal column, after all.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret #2bb:
“Imagine standing on the inside of a column for plies.”
