Technical Tuesday Rhomboid Muscles

Technical Tuesday Rhomboid Muscles

There are two rhomboid muscles: the rhomboid major and the rhomboid minor. The rhomboid major runs from the 1st to 4th vertebrae to the scapula (shoulder blades). The rhomboid minor originates from the 6th to7 th cervical vertebrae and inserts above the scapula.

These muscles contract and aid movement of the scapula, and assist in lowering the arm. The rhomboid muscles also stabilize the scapula during both rest and movement.

These muscles are prone to injury due to poor posture and/or overuse. Injuries to the rhomboid muscles are often seen in male dancers who have been doing repetitive lifting of a partner.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Anatomical Secret # 56
“The rhomboid muscles are two diamond shaped muscles in the shoulder girdle.”
