Saturday Idling Statute

Saturday Idling Statute

Yesterday I talked about Poised Posture and how a dancer is always in a position that sends energy up and energy down (at least), even when they are not moving.

Today’s Ballet Statute takes it a step further. Think of Poised Posture as a car with its engine idling. The motor is on, and in an instant the car can easily move when the accelerator is depressed. But if the engine is turned off, it takes longer and is less efficient to achieve a quick response.

Notice I said that the engine is idling. It is not being gunned or revved. That would equate to a dancer using too much energy, too much tension, and/or pulling upwards only and not sending an equal amount of energy down.

Idle your engine. Don’t rev it. And do not turn off the ignition!

Ballet Statute #91:
“A dancer is always ‘idling’.”
