Mad Monday Center Point

Mad Monday Center Point

During a pirouette, it is important to avoid twisting. Sometimes this twisting is obvious (when the torso corkscrews), but it is often more subtle. This occurs when the body maintains its correct, solid alignment, but the arms twist around with force of the turn. Scary.

The arms need to stay centered in front of the torso – in front of the vertical “belly button line” if you will. I talked about this before and used a prop (a towel) to illustrate. Search for Ballet Secret #20f: Use a towel to show how the arms must stay centered on the torso in a pirouette.

Whether you use a towel prop, or just remember to keep the arms centered, doing this one simple thing can significantly improve your pirouettes.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret #14cc:
“Keep the arms centered in front of the body during a pirouette.”
