Wild Wednesday Sweater Pull

Wild Wednesday Sweater Pull

It’s fall! Or so the calendar says, anyway. Soon we’ll be pulling out all those comfy, warm sweaters. Which reminds me…

So often when dancers are doing a first to fifth en haut port de bras, they allow their arms to over-cross and squash (and there is no squashing in ballet, as per statute). This makes it appear as though they are removing a sweater over their head. Not good.

The only time a port de bras is permitted to over-cross is in Swan Lake or other bird-like variations, and that’s a different animal…or bird.

Instead, always maintain the correct shape and distance from the body in the arms during all port de bras. Only real sweaters should be removed.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Dance History Factoid # 94
“A port de bras from first to fifth en haut should not look like taking off a sweater.”
