Wacky Wednesday Pre-Pirouette Preparation System

Wacky Wednesday Pre-Pirouette Preparation System

I’ve blogged before about promenades, what the word means and how any promenade must be done with the weight over the ball of the foot. But the beauty of a promenade goes beyond this. It is essentially a pre-pirouette preparation system.

That’s correct. A promenade is simply a slow, methodical pirouette. The weight is on the ball of the foot, the dancer has a kind of spot (slower, focusing from wall to  wall to wall), and it is a kind of  turn (slower, but a turn nonetheless). Altogether a pre-pirouette preparation.

If a dancer can promenade well, with good posture and a secure position throughout, it is a good indication of readiness for other turns, particularly pirouettes.

So embrace promenades as what they are: a pre-pirouette preparation system.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Secret #14bb:
“A promenade is a pre-pirouette preparation system.”
