Saturday Sitting Statute

Saturday Sitting Statute

There is no sitting in ballet. None. Beginning students offen ask if they may sit down in class when they get tired. The answer is no. That’s because dancers spend the first part of class meticulously warming up their body and muscles ,and sitting down would negate all those efforts. So, once if a dancer sits down in class, (allowed only due to injury or illness) they stay there.

There are other areas of sitting such as sitting in the hips, or (gasp!) sitting in a pliƩ. Sitting while dancing means succumbing to gravity. And, as we all know, dancers strive to do the opposite: defy gravity.

Therefore there is no sitting in ballet. Never.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Ballet Statute #88:
“ There is no sitting in ballet.”

Quote of the Day:
“Gravity is a contributing factor in nearly 73 percent of all accidents involving falling objects. ”
