Wild Wednesday Double

Wild Wednesday Double

Dancers usually focus their attention and effort on the working leg or the working foot. We even refer to it this way: “working”. But this is not really true.

Both legs are always working. Even the supporting leg – sometimes the supporting leg is working even harder. It is helpful to remember this fact. Also, the torso, the arms and the head are working too. At the same time. Nothing works in isolation.

If the working leg is rotating, so is the supporting leg. If the working leg is doing a high developpĂ©, the supporting leg, arms and torso are simultaneously lengthening and balancing the energy of the developpĂ© with an equal and opposite energy. Otherwise, the turn-out in the supporting leg will be compromised and the supporting side will tend to roll inward – in the direction of the working leg. Not good.

It is never just about the working leg.
