Marvelous Monday Flag Signals

Marvelous Monday Flag Signals

Port de bras should always look lovely and fluid. Yes, even for the gentleman, although their arms will be less “flowery” than women.

Unfortunately, sometimes stiffness creeps in and the arms end up looking like a series of flag signals. You know, those things you learned about in girl and boy scouts using flag formations as codes (see above image and video link). This is fine for sending messages across distances, but not for port de bras.

Instead, allow the arms to relax enough to move fluidly without locking the elbows or the wrist. It is when the joints “lock” that the flag signal appearance begins.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Ballet Secret #6ss:
“Port de bras should never look stiff - like flag signals.”
