Fun Friday Toe Pads

Fun Friday Toe Pads

You thought from the title that I was going to talk about those cushy things you put in pointe shoes – but no. I’m talking about that part of the foot underneath the toes – the “fingerprint” part of them, or “toeprint” if you will.

This is an important area to feel, especially in pointe work, but also in many other things like relevés and jumps. Moving from the whole foot to a fully pointed foot requires an articulation of the foot – it never moves from flat to pointed in one segment.

The foot moves, cat-like, from lifting the heel, to moving to the demi-pointe, to the pads of the toes, to the tips of the toes, and finally to a fully pointed foot . This occurs whether in the air (as in a jump) or on pointe (in a relevé). It also occurs at any tempo.

Think about the pads-of-the-toes area and use it today.

Ballet Secret #8i:
“Be aware of and use the “fingerprints” or pads of your toes.”
