Wild Wednesday Photo Lines

Wild Wednesday Photo Lines

I’ve talked before about the central axis in balletic positions. This line is the center of everything and may or may not begin or exit at the top of the head. Everything depends on the dancer’s ability to constantly arrange his or her body around this central pole.

Remember Ballet Secret #20: Pick up a dropped towel in the center to show how the weight of the body should fall around a central axis. This is one way to demonstrate and visualize this imaginary line.

Here is another way. In any photograph of a dancer, a line can be drawn showing the central axis. On a photocopy or in a computer drawing program, actually draw a line on a dance photo. This is a good way to actually see the central axis. Other geometric lines can also be drawn, illustrating the lines of the body or the curve of a movement.

It’s fun. Try it!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Ballet Secret #1aaa
Draw imaginary (or not) lines on any photograph to “see” the central axis in any position.
