Fun Friday Factoid Ballet

Fun Friday Factoid Ballet

Today I’m starting a new category about fun facts. These are surprising, interesting or even bizarre facts related to the world of ballet and dance.Today it’s the word ballet itself. Despite what most dancers believe, the word isn’t originally French.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, It comes from the mid-17th century and the Italian word balletto (diminutive of ballo) meaning “a dance”. Further back in history, it derived from the Latin ballare, meaning “to dance”.

So, unlike many other ballet terms like plié and tendu, etc., the word ballet doesn’t come from the French language originally.

Very interesting.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Fun Factoid #27a:
The word ballet is not originally French, but comes from the Italian word balletto.
