Fun Friday Airplanes and Grand Battements

Fun Friday Airplanes and Grand Battements

Aren’t grand battements fun? It’s usually the first time at barre when you can really let loose! Legs flying around, high extensions on full display. Whew!

But, like so many steps, grand battements have their problems. Often it is during the landing in fifth. Because of all the energy expended in getting the legs high in the air, the landings in fifth can sometimes (gasp!) crash. Not good.

Instead, imagine that the working foot is a small airplane filled with tiny passengers. The landing must be as smooth as any landing in a real airplane. No bumping or jostling of passengers is allowed.
Always taxi smoothly into fifth position.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Ballet Secret #12g:
“Imagine the working foot as an airplane filled with tiny people, and make sure the landing is a smooth one.”

Link of the Day:

Quote of the Day:
“The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
