Wild Wednesday Photo Line

Wild Wednesday Photo Line

I’ve blogged before about the body’s imaginary central axis that runs through a dancer’s center of balance like the pole on a merry-go-round animal. Here is another way to think about this crucial element:

Imagine a photograph of yourself, in any balletic position, and then imagine drawing a straight line on that picture. This line represents the central axis and the bottom of this line should end at, between, or beyond the supporting foot (or feet). Where the line goes at the top depends on the dancer’s position. If she is standing in first, the  line goes from between the heels up through the center of the torso and exits from the top of the head.

However, if the position is an arabesque, the line runs from the supporting foot through the supporting leg and exits through the lower back. This is because the upper torso is slightly in front of the supporting leg in arabesque. It all depends on the position!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Ballet Secret #2x:
“Imagine a photograph of yourself with a straight line drawn on it illustrating the central axis of balance.”

“There is nothing wrong with loving your work and wanting to apply yourself to it. But there is so much more to life. Balance is what is important, maintaining balance.”
