Wild Wednesday Facets
When students first learn the step called promenade, they
often treat it like a race to get to the finish line. I explain that promenades
are designed to move slowly. Remember Ballet
Secret #14a: The word ‘promenade’
means to take a walk so as to meet or be seen by others.
Imagine a jewelry store. A beautiful diamond is placed under
glass, on a slowly rotating platform that is brightly lit. As the platform
slowly rotates, every facet of the diamond catches the light and reflects it
brilliantly as the platform moves.
This is a good image for promenades: think of the body and
its position as a multi-faceted diamond, and promenade slowly and deliberately
so each and every facet can catch and reflect the light.
