Wacky Wednesday Penchée Push

Welcome to Wacky Wednesday penchée! I have posted blogs about penchée before:
Ballet Secret 21b:  “The rule of the penchée:  the body is only allowed to go down as much as the leg goes up.”
Ballet Secret 21c:   “To help maintain stability in a penchée, think of sending energy outward through the working leg”; and
Ballet Secret # 21g: “The word “penchée” means leaning or inclined.”

But the question I am asked most often is: “How can I do a 6 o’clock penchée?”

If a dancer is able to do a split on the floor, they can do a 6 o’clock penchée. This sounds simple enough, but in practice it can be difficult. That’s because on the floor, gravity pulls the dancer’s legs into a split. In a penchée, the dancer must push enough with the working leg, and resist enough with the standing leg to apply the force that gravity does on the floor. There is also the little problem of maintaining balance during the operation, especially when the dancer is wearing pointe shoes.

So to do the coveted split or 6 o’clock penchée, practice applying enough force with the working leg to get to the position, without forgetting all the aforementioned Ballet Secrets for penchées.
