Wacky Wednesday Waltz Turns
A waltz turn is a balancé that turns: a balancé en tournant.
It is a beautiful step, and one that looks much more complex than it is. It is
almost impossible to imitate, and a student needs to know the secret formula in
order to do it easily.
I’ve talked before about how some steps have formulas and
waltz turns are a prime example. Here is the two-part secret formula: Part One:
Step brush, step, step. Part
Two: Step, turn-and- brush, step, step.
The key is this: the
body doesn’t turn until Part Two. When a student attempts to imitate this
step, inevitably the turn happens too soon, making it very confusing. The other
secret is that this step is done (usually) to a ¾ musical tempo, and the first
two movements (step brush) is done on
the beat of one.
After a student learns the formula, or the pattern of the
step, further tweaking can occur easily.
