Wild Wednesday Finish
Well, it is (at last) time to say goodbye to the month of
March and hello to April. Yes, it is April Fool’s Day but I shall leave the
shenanigans to someone else. Instead, I’m going to talk about finishing.
Never leave any
movement or combination of steps without a proper finish. Unless you fall off a
stage or have some other catastrophic event occur while dancing, finishing is critical. This is partly
because of the old adage: “an audience
remembers best what it sees last”, and partly because it develops the habit
of “saving” something that might otherwise crash and burn, and partly because
it fosters the habit of
finishing. And, like so many other things in dance technique, finishing just makes anything look
better.
So don’t fall out of that pirouette – finish it. Don’t walk off the floor because the piqué
turns didn’t go as well as you expected.
Don’t balance for two seconds at the barre and tell yourself you’ll do
better tomorrow. Finish. Finish Finish.
