I have written before about the arms in à la seconde, and
how it is a wide position and how the beautiful, elongated curve of the arms
doesn’t change as the port de bras changes (except in the instance of fifth en
avant during a pirouette).
To prevent drooping arms in à la seconde, imagine embracing
the whole world (earth) and think about how wide the curve would have to be for the arms to do this. This
also helps keep the arms slightly in front of the side seam of the leotard or tee shirt,
because despite the way it may appear (ballet is based on illusion), the arms
are never completely straight (elbows locked) in ballet, and always in the "control zone".
In à la seconde the arms are also constantly sending energy
outward, through the fingertips and this would create a lovely, glowing ring around the earth.
