Wacky Wednesday Double Trouble

Wacky Wednesday Double Trouble

A common problem with plié is the dreaded double trouble plié. You know the kind I mean. Usually seen before a relevé or a jump, this plié occurs when the dancer gets to the bottom of the plié too soon and has to re-plié – add an extra plié at the end. This ruins the whole impetus of the step, and usually causes the seat to go out and/or the heels to lift off the floor. Isn’t it strange how one small thing cascades into other bad habits? To paraphrase Bette Davis, “ballet dancing isn’t for sissies.”

Well, double pliés don’t have to happen. If you are already in the habit of double plié-ing, take some time to watch yourself in the mirror. Plié over and over without hesitating at the bottom and then plié into a relevé over and over until the muscle memory is changed. It may take a while but it is well worth it! Your pirouettes and jumps will thank you.

Remember, only one plié to a customer.
