Technical Tuesday Safety Pin

Allowing the rib cage to open up and stick out is a common problem for dancers. It usually results from arching the back and allowing the abdominal muscles to take the day off. Often a reminder to “use the abdominals” or “hold your core” is all it takes for the student’s posture to come back into alignment.

But sometimes those pesky lower ribs persist in poking out, which keeps the back arched. To help with this, imagine a giant safety pin, and picture what it would be like to take your leotard or tee shirt and gather it together with the pin parallel to the floor, and in front of the lower ribs. Now, imagine doing that with the rib cage itself (using a painless safety pin, of course).

Gathering each side of the lower rib cage together like gathering a leotard allows the rib cage to fall in place – centered over the pelvis. It also prevents the arching of the back.
