Madcap Monday Sticky Pinky

Madcap Monday Sticky Pinky

When the whole foot is on the floor, as in one-leg supporting positions
or in any of the five positions of the feet, it is important to avoid excessive pronation (rolling) of the foot and ankle. This is common when dancers push their turnout from the ankles or the feet instead of the hip socket, and the body compensates by rolling forward from the ankles with the little toes lifting off the floor. Scary.

Excessive pronation can cause many problems and injuries, not to mention weakening the ankle when it is in this compromised position.

Obviously this forward rolling of the foot is to be avoided, and to do this imagine a small piece of round Velcro attached to the pinky toe. This tiny circle needs to stick to the floor any time the whole foot is supposed to be in contact with the ground.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #1jj:
Imagine a round piece of Velcro under the little toe.
