Fun Friday Bird’s Eye View

One of the absolutes in ballet technique is this: changing the ligaments, tendons and muscles is relatively easy, but changing the bone structure – the skeletal system – is almost impossible.  Therefore, we must work with our bone structure, and not against it.

For good posture, most of the time the rib cage should be aligned over the pelvis. This sounds simple enough, but it is all too easy to allow the ribs to “poke out” and the spine to arch. This swayback posture is, unfortunately, common – especially for beginning dancers.

To prevent this, and to maintain proper alignment, imagine what a bird flying overhead would see if it had x-ray vision. Looking down on the dancer’s skeleton the bird would be able to see completely through the rib cage and the pelvis to the ground – if the alignment is correct.

Perhaps we could utilize drones with x-ray cameras to check and see if our posture is correct from high above!
