Fun Friday Flames

Fun Friday Flames

A common petit allegro exercise is a jeté temps levé combination. It is useful for developing strength on one leg for jumps and many other steps.

The problem usually occurs during the temps levé, because the amount of energy required to fully stretch the foot in the air is considerable. The first attempts a student makes reveal how difficult jumping on one foot can be, and how much effort is involved. It can seem impossible at first.

An image that helps is this one: imagine flames shooting from the toes down toward the floor as the jump occurs. Picture a rocket lifting off the launch pad and all the fire and smoke that rushes down and out.

This rocket blast is important because there should never be a relaxed foot in the air during any jump.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #15t:
“Imagine flames shooting from the bottoms of the temps levé toes.”

Quote of the Day:
“Ever since we were little, we were so on fire for our dreams. We never let anyone blow our flames out.”
