Saturday Secret

Saturday Secret

During my dance training, my teacher required us to arrive fifteen minutes early for class.  She actually took roll at this time, and if we weren't there, we were considered late.  Her famous saying:  “If you are five minutes early you are already ten minutes late”, is well remembered by all of us who studied with her.

It may sound extreme by today’s standards, but it served, and still serves, a very important purpose: mental preparation.  In order to succeed at anything, the proper mindset is crucial.  Arriving early for class allows a short period of time to focus on the upcoming business:  a dance class.  If the time preceding one’s arrival has been filled with stress or worries, these negative thoughts and emotions will carry over into the class unless a conscious effort is made to refocus.  Arriving early allows time for this redirection of thoughts.

So arrive early if at all possible.  Use the time to focus on what you wish to achieve in class – or just quiet your mind.  You’ll soon see the benefits!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #7aa:
“Arrive early for class.  This allows time for proper mental preparation.”
