Fun Friday Fabulous Frappés

Fun Friday Fabulous Frappés

Frappés are unique – they are designed to prepare the dancer for the quick footwork needed in the center for petit allegro combinations – and their movement is a bit different than any other step.

The accent is out, but with a twist.  The out, or fully extended position of the foot, is achieved with lightening speed (see the blog about a snake striking:  http://balletwebb.blogspot.com/2013/11/frappes-and-snakes.html ).  But not only that, once the foot is in the “out” position, it must pause there, long enough for a photograph to be taken.  During this pause, the energy keeps going out into space.  This sharpness of attack is what makes jumps sparkle!

So remember, quickly out, then hold, hold, hold.  In any frappé, the movement stops, but the energy continues.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Secret #10c:
“A frappé should get to its fully extended position quickly and then the movement should stop – but the energy continues.”
