Wild Wednesday Wobbles

Wild Wednesday Wobbles

Dancers don’t wobble.  At least, they try not to wobble.  There are innumerable places where wobbling is a constant threat, so a number of tools in a dancer’s tool chest need to be dedicated to stamping out wobbling.

One of the most problematic areas for wobbles is when the dancer is wearing pointe shoes and the bottoms of the feet are in full contact with the floor.  Wobbles happen here due to the structure of the pointe shoe itself.   This is when remembering to allow the foot the melt into the floor is important.  (See previous blog:  http://balletwebb.blogspot.com/2014/04/fun-friday-and-feet.html ).  But the most important thing to think about is this:  “Have the majority of the body’s weight over the ball of the foot, not the heel”.

The next handy hint to prevent wobbles is one that helps whenever a dancer is balancing on one leg (which is, of course, most of the time).  Place the body over the supporting leg so that the belly button is aligned over the foot.  See previous blogs:  http://balletwebb.blogspot.com/2013/09/balancing-on-one-leg.html  , and http://balletwebb.blogspot.com/2014/03/wild-wednesday-statute-15.html.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Statutes:

Statute #19:
“There are no wobbles in ballet.”
